Phil Esposito
Phil Esposito (Philip Anthony Esposito) played 18 seasons in the National Hockey League for the Chicago Black Hawks, Boston Bruins and New York Rangers. He is an Honoured Member of the Hockey Hall of Fame and is considered to be one of the best to have ever played in the National Hockey League.
During 1970–71, Esposito shattered the record for most goals scored in a season when he finished up with 76. His long-standing record was only surpassed many years later by another hockey legend, Wayne Gretzky. Esposito won the Art Ross Trophy five times, the Hart Trophy twice, the Lester B. Pearson Award twice and the Lester Patrick Trophy. He represented Canada in the 1972 Summit Series, the 1976 Canada Cup and the 1977 World Championship. In his 76-goal season, he also recorded a remarkable 76 assists for a league record of 152 points at that time.
Esposito grew up in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, with his younger brother Tony, one of the game’s greatest goalies. He played for the St. Louis Braves in the Central Hockey League from 1962-1964. Called up by the Chicago Black Hawks, he scored 23, 27 and 21 goals in his first three seasons, often in on key scoring situations with line mate Bobby Hull. Traded to the Boston Bruins for the 1967-68 season, he joined the great Bobby Orr on a powerhouse team winning two Stanley Cup championships in three years.
Esposito was traded to the New York Rangers before retiring in 1981. Since then he has served in administrative positions for several teams in the National Hockey League, and was the President and General Manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning for several years during the 1990s. He currently co-hosts a daily call-in show on XM Satellite Radio’s Home Ice channel and has appeared on the FX network show Rescue Me.
